Hospital-based dental care for patients with special needs

Spectra Dental Care provides evaluation and individualized treatment planning for people of all ages who need additional support to receive dental care safely. We work with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, sensory, communication, or behavioral support needs, complex medical conditions, and others who face barriers to receiving care in traditional dental settings.

When clinically appropriate, we provide comprehensive dental treatment in a hospital under general anesthesia.

Hospital-based dental treatment is currently provided at three hospitals in the greater Portland area and Willamette Valley.

What we do

Spectra Dental Care provides consultations, individualized treatment planning, and hospital-based dental treatment for people who may need additional support or a different care setting.

Consultation and evaluation

We begin by learning about the patient’s dental needs, medical history, previous experiences with dental care, and the support that may help care proceed safely and respectfully.

Individualized treatment planning

Dr. Samuel works with patients, families, caregivers, guardians, and referring clinicians to develop an individualized plan based on each patient’s dental and medical needs, communication preferences, sensory or behavioral support needs, and ability to tolerate treatment.

Hospital-based dental treatment

When clinically appropriate, comprehensive dental treatment is provided in a hospital under general anesthesia, with coordination among the dental team, anesthesia team, hospital staff, and caregivers.

Who we serve

Some patients need more support, planning, or coordination to receive dental care safely and respectfully. Spectra Dental Care focuses on patients who may face barriers in a traditional dental office.

Patients may include individuals who:

  • Have intellectual or developmental disabilities

  • Have medical, behavioral, sensory, or communication needs

  • Have complex medical conditions

  • Have difficulty tolerating dental examinations or treatment in a traditional dental office

  • Need caregivers, guardians, or medical providers involved in care planning

  • May require hospital-based dental treatment under general anesthesia

Hospital-based dental care when needed

Some patients cannot safely or comfortably complete needed dental care in a traditional office setting. When clinically appropriate, hospital-based dental treatment under general anesthesia may allow necessary care to be completed safely and efficiently.

Spectra Dental Care works with patients, families, caregivers, guardians, medical providers, anesthesia teams, hospital staff, and referral partners to support thoughtful care planning.
